6 Photoshoot Outfit Color Scheme Ideas

Being a photographer, I always get asked by clients for help in deciding what to wear for their portrait session. I absolutely love helping clients pick outfits and color schemes. Picking a cohesive palette is important as it’s like deciding on paint for a painting! Certain colors look best at certain times of the day or year. The location also plays into what colors look best for example are you in a warm wooded area or are you downtown surrounded by cement and glass buildings?

I’ve rounded up some favorite, unique palettes of past clients for your own inspiration. I’ve also scoured amazon for women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing pieces for each color palette. Make sure to save or pin this post for your next family photoshoot inspo!

1. Emerald Green, Navy, and Neutrals – Autumn Family Photoshoot Color Scheme

Dark shades of blue and green will contrast beautifully off of a neutral outdoor backdrop (especially at golden hour!) This cool-toned combination can show some individuality by wearing different tints of each color.

2. Rose and Sage Green – Fall Family Photography Color Scheme

This floral-inspired fall color scheme is a gorgeous and unique take on a warm fall palette. Although the rosy pink color is cool-toned, it looks great in warm, outdoor settings.

3. Orange, Yellow, Maroon, and Navy – Family Photography Color Scheme

This warm, almost gem-toned, color palette is perfect for a fun fall photoshoot. These colors look even better in velvet or corduroy as pictured above.

4. Blue and Pink – Family Photoshoot Color Scheme

I’m loving this subtle spring cotton candy color palette. You can add dimension with various shades of blue or incorporate denim pieces. Stick to the bubblegum pink to keep the integrity of the color palette.

5. Brown and Green – Family Photoshoot Outfit Color Palette

Get inspired by nature! This cozy warm brown and deep green palette is beautiful in any outdoor golden hour setting.

6. Blue and Green – Family Photography Color Scheme

This blue and green combo is the spring/summer version of the first, crisp jade, color palette I showed above. This palette looks good in green settings for daytime photoshoots. Be conscious of photographers who edit blues to be more muted. Your sky blue could start to look more like a cloudy day if that is the style in which your photographer edits.

Are you inspired yet?

Like I said above, making sure your family looks cohesive is important for beautiful portraits. Don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for ideas and input on what to wear for your portraits. Chances are they will be more than excited to help style you and your family.

I typically like to lean toward gem tones, neutrals, and black for portraits. I also love different textures and accessorizing! Utilize hats, scarves, patterns, jackets, and shoes! From your head to your toes – every detail counts.

One piece of advice I can give when trying to decide on what to wear is to wear what you are comfortable yet confident in! If you feel uncomfortable in something that can be reflected in photos. If it’s not you then you won’t look/feel like you!
