Some engagement sessions are romantic.
Some are playful.
And some feel like starring in your own romcom, or in this case, mystery movie.

CJ and Matt’s engagement session was exactly that.

Hidden clues, evidence bags, secret lockboxes, coded messages, suspiciously adorable detectives, and a bookstore full of potential answers — this entire session unfolded like a cinematic love story with one final reveal at the end:

Case closed. They’re engaged. 💍

As a engagement photographer, these are the kinds of sessions I absolutely live for. The ones that feel immersive. Intentional. Personal. The kind where every prop, pose, and tiny detail says something about the couple.

And honestly? CJ and Matt committed to the theme flawlessly.

The Investigation Begins

The session opened inside the coziest maze of towering bookstore shelves, where CJ and Matt introduced the very first clue: a corkboard titled Case File: The Unsolved Mystery.

Pinned across the board were snapshots from throughout their relationship connected by strands of yellow ribbon like a detective tracking a years-long investigation. One final square sat unfinished with a handwritten note:

“New clue incoming…”

Immediately, the storyline was set.

The chemistry between these two made every scene feel believable in the best way. Even while “investigating,” they naturally slipped into laughter, side glances, and little moments that made the photos feel less staged and more like watching two best friends solve a mystery together.

Searching for Clues Among the Shelves

The bookstore setting could not have been more perfect for this concept.

Between climbing rolling ladders, flipping through mystery books, searching hidden shelves, and decoding tiny clues tucked throughout the space, the session felt adventurous and playful from beginning to end.

Some of my favorite moments came from the quieter in-between interactions:

  • CJ smiling while pointing out clues in a book
  • Matt carefully inspecting evidence with a magnifying glass
  • the two of them searching shelves together shoulder-to-shoulder
  • the warm glow of the bookstore wrapping around every frame

The entire gallery has this cinematic, amber-toned atmosphere that feels equal parts nostalgic and curious — like a mystery novel you can’t stop reading.

Evidence Collected 🔎

And yes… there was actual evidence.

A tiny evidence bag labeled “Item #14” (14 is the proposal date) hung mysteriously from a ladder.
Crime scene markers sat beside the ring box hidden between stacked books.
A lockbox waited quietly among the shelves.
Everywhere you looked, another clue appeared.

What made the session work so well wasn’t just the props — it was how interactive everything felt. Instead of simply posing for photos, CJ and Matt were actively exploring the story together. I would give them a prompt or choreography to act out which helped make them feel more comfortable yet dynamic on camera.

That kind of movement and interaction creates the best documentary-style engagement photos because the reactions become genuine. The smiles become natural. The moments become real.

Authorized Personnel Only

Halfway through the session, the mystery escalated.

A giant “TOP SECRET” folder appeared hidden among the shelves, complete with locks, hidden documents, and confidential information only the lead investigators were apparently allowed to see.

Watching these two fully lean into the storyline made the session unbelievably fun to photograph. One minute they were carefully searching for clues, and the next they were laughing uncontrollably over whatever ridiculous prompt I was giving them.

That balance between cinematic and candid is exactly what I love most about engagement photography.

Case Closed 💍

And then came the final reveal.

Inside the case file:
“CASE CLOSED: WE’RE ENGAGED.”

Simple. Playful. Perfect.

The final newspaper-inspired image tied everything together beautifully, announcing their engagement like a dramatic headline ripped straight from a vintage mystery publication:

LOCAL DUO SOLVES THE CASE OF A LIFETIME

Honestly? Iconic.

Why I Love Creative Engagement Sessions

Sessions like this are such a good reminder that engagement photos do not have to fit inside a box.

You do not have to stand in a field at sunset if that doesn’t feel like you.

Your engagement session can be:

  • bookstore mysteries
  • dive bars and pool tables
  • kayaking dates
  • arcade nights
  • record stores
  • coffee shop hopping
  • cozy in-home storytelling
  • or an entire detective-themed love story complete with evidence markers and classified documents

The best engagement sessions are the ones that feel personal.

And CJ and Matt absolutely cracked the code on that one.
