A throwback and a story time of how I shot a wedding ceremony in rainstorm
I met Heather and Travis back in 2023 to shoot their two-part wedding. They planned to secretly elope and then a year later have a bigger wedding ceremony and reception. They wanted surprise everyone that they were already married but still had a ceremony portion for friends and family to be a part of.
Back to August of 2023 – the day of the elopement. It was just me, the couple, the officiant, two witnesses, and a videographer. I had asked if we could push back the time of the ceremony a couple days prior simply to have prettier lighting. It was just us anyways so no big deal, right?! Well, come day of, a rain storm was brewing while the couple was getting ready and it started to lightly rain while we did a first look. We pushed back the ceremony a couple minutes to allow it to let up. The rain, in face, did not let up. After a bit of time, Heather said F it! “I said I would marry you come rain or shine so let’s just do it in the rain!” Luckily, I always carry multiple umbrella’s in my car. I gave one to the videographer and wielded one as well. Juggling an umbrella and camera is a precarious act in itself! The ceremony started with only light rain drops. As we got to the exchanging of rings and first kiss, you can see in the images that the rain is starting to come down harder and by the time the couple was exiting, the rain was in a complete downpour. At least the rain was nice enough to hold back it’s full wrath until the end.
The bad part was that we had NOT done family or couples pictures yet….We did a couple group shots but everyone was soaked! To remedy not getting portraits, I offered Heather and Travis a redo day for couples pictures and I absolutely love they way they turned out….especially with the looming threat of ANOTHER rain storm on the day we planned for. We spent an evening in downtown Omaha followed up with celebratory drinks afterwards.
Fast forward a year, and the couple got a bright and sunny day for their wedding! I honestly was sad that we were wrapping up. Heather and Travis were an amazing couple to work with and we vibed so much! It truly was an honor to go on the journey with them!
And that is the story of how I shot a wedding in downpour rain! And couples, remember… anything can happen on your wedding day. The best thing you can do for yourself is remain open minded and go with the flow. At the end of the day, you love each other…come rain or shine!
