4 Favorite Wedding Floral Trends and Ideas For Your Wedding

So much of a modern wedding is rooted in centuries-old traditions. One of the oldest of those is the wedding bouquet. Why do the bride and bridesmaids carry flowers? Not only does it give us something to do with our hands, it once had a purpose that was more than for looks. One reason that may not be so obvious was to mask smells. Weddings pre-date the invention of deodorant, so floral bouquets were used as smell shields in medieval times…because what could be worse than being turned off by B.O. on your big day in 1200 A.D.

Another reason for wedding day florals includes spiritual and emotional superstitions. Tucked into our ancestor’s bouquets were certain spices and herbs to potentially ward off evil spirits. There were many superstitions surrounding weddings so couples took as many precautions as possible to help aid in a smooth sailing day. Dill also was thought to be an aphrodisiac… I don’t think I need to explain that one further.

Flowers aren’t just good for their fragrant properties though. Romans associated many qualities with them such as fertility, fidelity, and new beginnings.

Nowadays, while these original meanings behind flowers is lost, their role on a wedding day is just as important. Over the recent years, creativity and individuality within bouquets have bloomed. There are so many different shapes, sizes, and personality one can put into their arrangements. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite floral bouquet trends I’ve shot.

1. Colors In Bouquets

Creating a cohesive wedding look starts with picking colors. This will not only drive decisions on bridesmaids’ dresses and invitations but also your florals. Also, factors such as season and location may drive the look of your bouquet.

Pops of Color

I have had many weddings with bouquets that feature either a pop of one color to a rainbow of colors. I have been loving a very colorful bouquet with a neutral color palette as shown above. Pops of color look great in nature during the spring/summertime.

Neutrals

A bouquet that always will look good with a white wedding dress and black tux is a neutral/white floral combo. I love a white flower with greenery intermixed. They look good year-round in any location. From the beach to downtown, the only thing that would change is the type of flower.

Seasonal

Like I said above, the time of year will factor into your bouquet. It’s fun seeing the difference between what spring wedding bouquets look like vs. a winter wedding. I love the drama/contrast and darker florals typical in winter bouquets while spring bouquets are pastel or neutral and sometimes a little more “loose” in composition.

2. Hidden Sentiments

I Carry Your Heart With Me

One of my absolute favorite trends is adding little hidden charms or sentimental objects to a bouquet. The most beautiful ways I’ve seen people incorporate this are portraits of a late grandparent so that they can still walk down the aisle with you and be part of the day. What an absolutely heartfelt and meaningful trend.

Another favorite is the image of the dinosaur toy on a bouquet. The bride adored dinosaurs growing up so it’s an ode to her childhood and never forgetting who you are before starting a new chapter of life.

3. Unique Shapes

How cool is this circular bouquet? This unique bouquet can turn into a wedding day keepsake that you can hang on your wall.

4. Cascading

I love these almost “melting” bouquets that add so much drama and dimension. It’s cool how you can see cascading bouquets look good year-round. I love this type of bouquet for when the bride’s dress is on the simple, clean, and sleek side.
